The Governor's Executive Order on Tribal Consultations, effective beginning in 2014, directs each state agency to develop a formal tribal consultation policy. This ensures tribes have input when the state is contemplating actions that have tribal implications.
"Consultation, communication, and cooperation between state agencies and Utah's tribal nations are already taking place and yielding positive results," Governor Gary R. Herbert said when issuing the Executive Order. "This consultation executive order will build upon these successes and shows our strong commitment to strengthening the government-to-government relationship between the state and the tribes."
The full text of the executive order is available in HTML and PDF (begins on page 5). The press release announcing the order is also available.
Through the executive order, each state agency will be required to compile a report of consultation activities annually. These will be submitted to the governor and lieutenant governor, shared with tribal leaders, and posted for public review.
